How to Fix a Sagging Memory Foam Mattress

While popular, memory foam mattresses certainly have disadvantages that can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. That’s why Nolah mattresses never use memory foam. Instead, our premium mattresses use all-natural latex foam or our proprietary Nolah AirFoam™, which is scientifically proven to provide better cooling, pressure relief, and durability than traditional memory foam.

One of the most common issues with memory foam is its tendency to sag over time. Many memory foam mattress owners report sinking in the middle of the mattress after just a couple of years, causing discomfort and back pain. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to mediate this issue. You’ll eventually want a new mattress, but a couple of quick fixes can hold you over until then.

Sagging Mattress Causes

What makes a mattress sag? The culprit could be a combination of the following factors:

  • Low-Quality Construction– Some memory foam mattresses are just poorly made. All memory foam contains chemical additives that speed up degradation, but some use cheaper foam blends than others and start to sag with just a couple years of normal wear and tear.

  • Use Without a Base– Mattresses require some sort of foundation for proper support and protection. If you don’t use a bed frame, base, platform, or another sturdy elevated surface, your mattress may degrade faster. Not using a proper base also invalidates most mattress warranties.

  • Exceeding the Weight Tolerance– Exceeding a mattress’s listed weight tolerance can put more strain on the mattress than intended by design, causing early sagging.

  • High Moisture Content– Liquid and moisture exposure accelerates memory foam degradation. It also creates the perfect environment for mold and mildew, which also damages the foam.

  • Improper Care and Maintenance– Using a mattress for anything other than sleep (i.e., kids jumping on the bed) and poor mattress hygiene can also accelerate sagging.

How Long Does a Memory Foam Mattress Last?

A high-quality memory foam mattress should last for about six to eight years. However, keep in mind that there are many low-quality options on the market that don’t stay firm and supportive for that long. Also, even the best memory foam mattresses have a shorter lifespan than hybrid models, latex mattresses, and foam mattresses made with viscoelastic chemical-free polyfoam.

A high-quality memory foam mattress should last for about six to eight years.

How to Fix a Sagging Memory Foam Mattress

A little mattress sagging may not seem like a big deal, but if left unchecked, it could cause stiff muscles and joints, contribute to insomnia, and exacerbate current medical conditions. Unfortunately, you can’t physically fix the mattress itself, but you can try these tricks and tips to improve the overall support and feel of your bed and to prevent further sagging.

Use a Mattress Topper

Adding a mattress topper to your bed is one of the simplest solutions to your memory foam mattress sagging, sinking in the middle, or otherwise losing support. Typically made from foam, latex, or fabric stuffed with comforting filler, a mattress topper adds cushioning and support. It can also help even out the feel of a sinking or indented mattress. Replace Your Platform or Base

If you suspect your platform or base is the culprit behind your sinking mattress, it may be time for a replacement. If it's missing slats or holes in the foundation, this can cause your mattress to sink into the holes, causing much sleep discomfort. Mattress support is essential in keeping your mattress comfortable and can extend its lifespan, so make sure you have a quality platform or base.

Use Plywood or Cardboard to Improve Your Mattress Foundation

Instead of replacing your base, you can try placing some sturdy cardboard or plywood on top of the foundation to patch the area as a short-term solution.

How to Prevent Mattress Sagging

If your mattress is just starting to sink or sag, you can take preventative action to prevent or delay further damage. We recommend the following:

Invest in a Mattress Protector

Properly protecting your mattress can extend its lifespan and help preserve memory foam. A waterproof mattress protector can keep moisture, dust mites, and mold out of your mattress, helping the foam last longer.

Rotate Your Mattress Every Six Months

Rotating your mattress 180 degrees every six months is a great way to lengthen the mattress’s lifespan. This trick ensures you sleep on every square inch of the mattress, spreading out the natural wear and tear of everyday use.

When to Buy a New Mattress

Unfortunately, no mattress can last forever. If your memory foam mattress shows signs of sagging, it may be time to replace it altogether. If you’re experiencing severe insomnia, back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, muscle pain, or soreness, and you suspect your mattress is the cause, it’s time for a brand-new bed. Otherwise, you can’t get the restorative rest you need for a healthy life.

When you pick out your new mattress, be sure to prioritize qualities like pressure relief, cooling, and the right firmness level for your sleep position. If you choose a quality option made with durable materials, sagging will never be an issue with your new bed.

How to Restore a Memory Foam Mattresses

Like all mattresses, memory foam mattresses eventually wear out and need to be replaced. If your mattress has begun to sag or become uneven, try using a mattress topper until you can buy a whole new bed. A quality mattress topper will even out the sleeping surface, add pressure relief, and provide additional support.

How to Make a Mattress Firmer

Not satisfied with the firmness of your mattress? Once again, a mattress topper is the easiest solution. Just make sure to purchase a topper with a higher firmness level than your current mattress. This will add comfort and support if your current sleep surface is too soft and cushioning to keep your spine properly aligned.
